This tool, once selected, allows you to input points within the current map view to define a line
or area used to highlight multiple features and return information about them in the Results/Report Area. Please note that to select features in a certain layer, that layer must be selected as the "Active" layer in the Layer List. See
Making a layer the active layer for more information. To begin,
zoom in
to the area of interest so that it appears in the map view. Choose the "Select By Line/Polygon" tool in the Toolbar. In the Results/Report Area, on the right hand side of the screen, the Select Line or Polygon sub function tools will become visible. Click on your desired starting point in the map window. The application will
return a map view with a red dot located where you clicked. Subsequent input points return a map view with red dots indicating your click points connected by a line. The segment of line from your last input point to your first will appear dashed. To select features based on an line input, you must input at least two points and at least three points
to select based on a polygon. To select using the line, when finished inputting your points, click the "Complete Line" button in the Results/Report Area. All features from the "Active" layer that intersect with the non-dashed portions of your line will be selected. To select using the polygon, when finished inputting your points,
click the "Complete Polygon" button in the Results/Report Area. All features from the "Active" layer that intersect with both the line (including the dashed section) and the area or polygon defined by the line will be selected.
If you find you need to change the extent of the map view while adding input points, you can do so with the Pan or Zoom tools without disrupting the input process. Simply choose the Select By Line/Polygon tool
again once you have finished changing the map extent and continue to add points. If you input an errant point, you can choose to remove the last point by clicking on the "Remove Last Point" button. You can
also choose to clear all of the points that you have input by clicking on the "Remove All Points" button or by clicking the "Clear Selection" button in the Toolbar.
You may only select features in one layer at a time. To select features from a different type of geographic
layer, you must click the radio button in the Layer List "Active" column next to the appropriate layer name. Certain map layers will have additional tools or functions become available once a feature has been identified or selected. These tools or functions will be located with the returned information in the
Results/Report Area. For example when a parcel feature is identified or selected the "Find Adjoiners" and "Tax Information" buttons become available. See the section on Miscellaneous Functions and Links for more information.
