Map Display:
This main portion of the
screen is where you view the map that meets the specifications you have ordered. As you pass the mouse over
the Map Display, the coordinates of the cursor point are displayed in the statusbar at the bottom of your browser window.
These coordinates correspond to the NAD83 Virginia State Plane coordinate system and are in units of feet.
In the lower right of the Map Display is a scale bar which indicates the scale of the returned map in feet.
Location Map:
The small locator map
provides a point of reference for the current map view. Even though the current map view
may be zoomed in to a single parcel of land, the location map will always indicate where
in the County the current map view is located.
Layer List:
Different types of geographic data
are called "layers." The Layer List lists all of the layers that may be viewed on
the map. Any number of layers may be viewed at one time, depending on the zoom level in
the current map view. The Layer List contains options for turning layers on and off as well as
labeling and identifying/selecting the features in a layer. Changes made in the Layer List must be
submitted to the application by pressing the Apply Changes button. A more detailed description of the
Layer List and its functions is provided in the detailed function
descriptions section.
Toolbar:
Many of the basic
functions needed to navigate around or interact with the County's geographic data are located above the Map Display
in the Toolbar. These tool functions allow you to zoom in, zoom out, and pan (i.e., recenter) the map view as well as
identify or select map features, create thematic maps or create a print preview page. Each
of these functions is explained in greater detail in the detailed
function descriptions section.
Search Functions:
The DemographicMapper also
contains many useful search tools which can be found in a drop-down box to the right of the Map Display. These functions allow you to quickly locate features on
the map by entering search criteria or by selecting from a predefined list of features. Examples of the available functions are: Locate a
Parcel by entering an address or Grid
Parcel Identification Number (GPIN), or Locate a Census Tract. All of the Search Functions are explained in greater
detail in the detailed function descriptions section.
Results/Report Area:
This area to the right of the Map Display is used to gather information from or return information to the user.
If you identify or select map features it is in the Results/Report Area that the data will be returned. When using the Search Functions that require entry of search criteria, it is in
this area that you will be prompted for input. The Results/Report Area is also used to prompt you for more input with some of the Toolbar tools, such as the Create Thematic Demographic Map, Select by Line or Polygon
and the Print Preview tools.
Viewer Tabs:
These tabs allow the user to switch between interactive mapping applications. If viewing the DemographicMapper
and you click the CountyMapper tab, the CountyMapper viewer will open replacing the DemographicMapper. Your map extent and layer selections will
be preserved for ease of interoperability, however any selections will be lost.
